Highway Slowdown Alerts Now Available For Truckers in North Carolina

EDMONTON, Alberta, May 26, 2021 – Intelligent Imaging Systems (IIS), a connected truck services company, has announced a partnership with the North Carolina DOT in a one-year pilot program to provide Highway Slowdown alerts on all 182 miles of Interstate 95 and rural portions of Interstate 40.

The alerts will be provided through IIS’ sister company, Drivewyze -- North America’s largest provider of weigh station bypass and connected truck services. Messages such as “Sudden Slowdown Ahead” and “Congestion Ahead” will be displayed on ELDs, and other in-cab devices, approximately 2- to 3 miles before the slowdown begins, giving truckers plenty of time to slow their speed. Information is in real time, with congestion and incident data provided by INRIX, a leader in transportation analytics and connected vehicle services. INRIX has partnered with IIS for the slowdown notifications. North Carolina DOT is leveraging the Eastern Transportation Coalition’s Vehicle Probe Project Marketplace to license the alerts.

“We strive to let people know of unexpected traffic conditions," said Kevin Lacy, the State Traffic Engineer at NCDOT. “We're excited to be working with an industry partner that is using new technology. Truck drivers will be able to get advance warning of a major roadway incident before they see it on one of our dynamic message signs."

Accidents on interstates represent nearly 30% of all collisions, and many are secondary crashes where a truck or car rear-ended a vehicle that was in a queue from the initial crash. A Pennsylvania DOT study showed 82% of secondary crashes occurred more than 15 minutes after the initial crash, and 49% occurred over an hour later.

“We’re pleased to partner with the North Carolina Department of Transportation in providing a ‘connected truck’ solution that gives truckers a heads-up on unforeseen slowdowns,” said Brian Heath, president and CEO of IIS. “These alerts will no doubt help with traffic safety along interstates in North Carolina. We’re a company committed to highway safety and we applaud how the North Carolina DOT is the first state agency to provide these important safety alerts to truckers. We expect more states to follow.”

“With advanced algorithms analyzing millions of anonymous connected vehicles traveling more than a billion miles daily in the U.S., INRIX identifies and monitors traffic slowdowns to provide invaluable real-time information to truckers,” said Rick Schuman, Vice President, Public Sector Americas, INRIX. “It’s exciting to partner with IIS to offer states meaningful safety information to commercial drivers. With North Carolina the first to come on board, we expect other DOTs to follow suit and be as enthusiastic about the opportunity as we are.”
